About
'Discussing what Divides'
The Edinburgh Union is an apolitical debating society designed to champion free and open debate in Scotland.
Founded in 2025, the Edinburgh Union builds on the historic heritage of Edinburgh as a centre for academic, social and political thought. Hosting debates throughout the year, the Edinburgh Union will bring together individuals with opposing stances to champion their views whilst opening themselves up to criticism. As a platform for ideas, the Edinburgh Union is about engaging with and educating ourselves on the most important issues we face today. Democracy only functions when we discuss the issues that divide us with a willingness to re-assess our beliefs. We hope to build a society that challenges preconceptions and where we can appreciate different perspectives to our own.
Based in Scotland’s capitol, the Edinburgh Union is uniquely placed to reflect not only wider Global and UK topics, but also the issues within devolved Scottish life. The Union welcomes students and staff from multiple universities in Edinburgh and through outreach programmes and varsity events, the Edinburgh Union aims to become a hub of discussion for students across Scotland.
At the start of the Winter and Summer terms, the Union will publish its Term Card containing its line-up of debates. In the run up to each debate, influential guest speakers for each event will announced, with students being given the opportunity to speak alongside them. Applications to speak will last seven days and will open after the previous debate session ends. Tickets will be made available one week before each debate.
